Backup Application TransLog 5. Shrink TransLog Question Is there a more straightforward way or best practice to shrink Trans Log file under Full Recovery DB?
Happy New Year! Sincerely, Brian. Hi Bryan, We cannot speak about BPC best practices regarding maintenance of database. You have diferent strategies for backup and recovery of databasefunction by business requirements. If it is acceptable to loose 24 hours data thenrecommendation will be to keep database into simple mode and to do full backup every night. (After full backup it will be recommended also a shrink of transaction in this case).
Any way maintenance and strategie for backup and recovery is not something to be write in fer rows here. I suggest to read more into Microsotf site about Backupand recovery strategy fo rSQL server. If you are not in first case then you have to keep the database into full mode and you have to bacjup of transaction log every x hours whereX is define by business requirements (They accept to loose data in last x hours). In this case you don't have to do shrink. Shrink of transaction log will destroy you ability to recover the database until x hours when disaste happem.
It is not necessary to do shrink also because after each of backup(transacation log or full) the space of ldf filecan be reused. So that file is not growing any more. It is growing just when you will do an operation where the entire existing ldf file size is not enough and in thta case the file will grow. So in case if you keep the database into full mode you don't need to do shrink. Regards Sorin Radulescu 0 Likes 0.
